Mission of the Month: May 2012 {and April Accomplishments}

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Welcome to Mama’s Mission of the Month! My hope is that this will help me {and you} follow through on some of the goals that we have set for the month! So, if you are a mama and you want to join in, check out the intro post! (If you have already read the rules, you can easily grab the buttons from the Buttons Tab on the top of the sidebar.)

Mission of the Month

April Mission Update: I had a lot on my list and no, I didn’t get it all done. But, I did make good progress!

Personal:

1. Continue getting up before the kids during the week to have my devotion and prayer time. (This means well before 7am.) I did great with this until we went on a mini family vacation! I am still trying to get back in the groove!

2. Diligently work on memorizing scripture. I started the 40 Days in the Word Bible Study which is all about memorizing scripture!

3. Finish reading Sun Stand Still: What Happen When You Dare to Ask God for the Impossible and praying about my Page 23 Vision.

4. Complete 10 scrapbook pages.

Marriage:

5. Remember to flirt with my hubby everyday.

Parenting:

6. Read The 5 Love Languages of Children. I am LOVING this book! Don’t worry I have a review and giveaway coming up this month!

7. Continue to implement and discipline using The Child-Training Bible. This is ongoing, but I love the fruit from this process!

Homeschooling:

8. Go to my very first homeschool convention! Why oh why has it taken me 5 years to do this! It was awesome…though I was a bit overwhelmed!

9. Make the final decisions for our 2012-2013 curriculum. I will share, hopefully soon!

10. Continue to evolve and improve our new daily schedule. It is slowly but surely coming along!

Homemaking:

11. Plant our garden.

Ministry/Friendships/Extended Family:

12. Write 2 letters.

13. Decide on a ministry opportunity for my kids.

Financial:

14. Go back through Financial Peace Revisited and evaluate where we are in the process.

Blogging/Online Activity:

15. Implement my new printable and begin writing and scheduling blog posts at least one week in advance. I LOVE my new Blogging Planner! Not to worry, I WILL be sharing it soon!

16. Continue to stick with my new schedule for online activity.

17. Finish transferring all of my printable files over from 4shared to my MamaJenn.com site.   Working on it, but I still have quite a few left!

18. Format and figure out the new timeline on my Mama Jenn Facebook page and Education Cubes Facebook page. I did Mama Jenn…still need to do Education Cubes!

Mission NOT Accomplished YET

My Mission for May 2012:

Personal:

1. Get up before the kids during the week to have my devotion and prayer time everyday this month.

2. Memorizing four Bible verses.

3. Complete 10 scrapbook pages.

Marriage:

4. Keep flirting!

Parenting:

5. Finish The 5 Love Languages of Children.

Homeschooling:

6. Begin incorporating African American history.

Homemaking:

7. Replace a few of the plants in the garden that have already died.

8. Write 2 letters.

9. Decide on a ministry opportunity for my kids.

Blogging/Online Activity:

10. Share my new blogging planner.

Off the Grid {Addition & Subtraction Game}

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Welcome to Day 9 of 10 Days of Math Games & Activities! While tomorrow is the last day of the series, I will continue sharing lots of fun, hands-on math games and activities to utilize with your children or students throughout the coming weeks! But, today’s game, Off the Grid, provides a fun way to reinforce and practice basic addition and subtraction skills.

Off the Grid: Printable Addition & Subtraction Math Game

Materials Needed:

1) Two labeled dice. One die labeled with three addition symbols and three subtraction symbols. The other die labeled with 1, 2, 3, 10, 20 & 30 OR any other #s you would like to use. (We prefer to use either our Education Cubes or our Write-On Wipe-Off Dice)

2) Counters (We prefer to use our magnetic cookie sheet & puff ball magnets)

3) The Off the Grid game board grid included in the download

Prepare: Print one game board which is included in the download. Laminate or slide into a page protector for durability.

Play: Each player begins by placing their counter on a number on the board between 40 and 70. Each player takes turns rolling both of the dice/cubes and moving along the board as indicated by what is rolled. The winner is the first person to get “off the grid” (i.e. the first person to get off the board by rolling something that takes them beyond 0 or 100).

The Game in Action with 3 Players: Each play chooses a counter and a starting number. Player Red selects 51. Player Green selects 36. Player Yellow selects 55.

Off the Grid: Printable Addition & Subtraction Math Game

Player Red rolls + 10 and moves from 51 up to 61.

Off the Grid: Printable Addition & Subtraction Math Game

Player Green rolls – 3 and moves from 36 back to 33.

Off the Grid: Printable Addition & Subtraction Math Game

Next Player Yellow will roll and move. Players continue to take turns rolling and moving along the game board until one player goes “off the grid!”

Making it Whole: FREE Fractions Game

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Welcome to Day 8 of 10 Days of Math Games & Activities! For the next two weekdays I will continue sharing lots of fun, hands-on math games and activities to utilize with your children or students! Today’s game, Making it Whole, is all about fractions! The game provides a fun way to reinforce and practice adding fractions to make one whole.

Making it Whole: FREE Printable Fractions Game

Directions: Print the fraction cards included in the download. Laminate for durability and cut. Shuffle all the cards and place the deck face down. Turn over the top card, placing it in the middle. Each player takes turns turning over a card. If their card makes a whole with the card turned over in the middle, they keep both cards. If the cards do not make a whole, the player puts their card face up in the middle. The next player takes their turn. Play continues until all of the cards are gone. The player with the most cards wins.

The Game in Action: Begin by turning the top card over and placing it in the middle.

Player A turns over the top card in the deck, 2/3.

Since 1/8 and 2/3 do not make a whole, Player A puts the card in the middle.

Player B turns over the top card in the deck, 1/3.

Since 1/3 and 2/3 make a whole, Player B takes the two cards and sets them aside…

…leaving 1/8 in the middle.

Player A turns over the top card in the deck, 3/8.

Since 1/8 and 3/8 do not make a whole, Player A places the card in the middle.

Player B turns over the top card in the deck, 1/2.

Since 1/2 and 3/8 do not make a whole, Player B places the card in the middle.

Player A turns over the top card in the deck, 4/8.

Since 1/2 and 4/8 do make a whole, Player A takes both cards and sets them aside.

NOTE: You can still play this game even if you have not taught about reducing fractions. Simply acknowledge making wholes with the same denominator.

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Welcome to Day 7 of 10 Days of Math Games & Activities! For the next three weekdays I will continue sharing lots of fun, hands-on math games and activities to utilize with your children or students! Today’s game is called Grid Multiplication!

Grid Multiplication: Free Printable Math Game

Materials Needed:

1) Two dice labeled with numbers between 1 and 10 (We prefer to use either our Education Cubes or our Write-On Wipe-Off Dice)

2) Dry Erase Markers (Counters are optional)

3) The Grid Multiplication game board grid included in the download

Directions: Print one grid for each player. Laminate or slide into a page protectors for durability and repeated use. Each player takes turns rolling the dice/cubes and making an array on the grid corresponding to the numbers rolled. The first number rolled is the number of rows to color or cover (with counters) on the grid. The second number is the number of columns to color or cover on the grid. After making the array, the player writes the corresponding multiplication equations. The player with the largest product gets a point. The player with the most points wins!

Grid Multiplication in Action with 2 Players: Player A rolls a 4 & 5, colors the corresponding array, and writes the two multiplication equations.

Living Math Books: Reading for Math

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.

Welcome to Day 5 of 10 Days of Math Games & Activities! For the next five weekdays I will continue sharing lots of fun, hands-on math games and activities to utilize with your children or students! Today’s math activity is all about reading!

Living Math Books: Reading for Math

While you may be wondering about the correlation between math and reading, I would first like to present the idea of living math books!

I believe that a "living" math book is a book that presents mathematical concepts in real life context, which is relevant to the reader.
A living math book is not a text book; rather it is a book...plain and simple...a book...with a storyline, which happens to have math skills integrated within the story.

Such books can be used to teach and/or reinforce various mathematical skills and concepts. Hence, reading CAN be a fun, engaging math activity!

To get you started, here are some living math books for various different mathematical concepts. While the book images are linked to Amazon, many of the books can probably be found at your local library!
