“Set the Table” Placemats

This was a fun little project that I did with the older three kids. To help with learning how to properly set a table, we made "set the table" placemats. album 1.26.10 153 We used construction paper, clear contact paper and the printable placemat template found on the Nestle Family website. We printed off the template, traced it onto construction paper, and cut it out. Then, we glued the pieces onto a large piece of construction paper (with the proper positioning…of course) and labeled all the parts. Finally, I covered them with clear contact paper. In this pic, we practiced setting the table with some of our tea party supplies. We sometimes use the mats at the kitchen table with “real” utensils as well.

Proverbs 13:1 {printables}

With my daughter's My Father's World 1st grade curriculum, she is learning Bible verses from Proverbs. To help her remember them, I have made printables for her for each of the Proverbs covered in the curriculum. We put an 8.5x11 of the verse up on our Bible board and I also scale it down and print it onto a blank 4x6 inch index card to go into her Bible verse memory book.

I also created printable copywork for each of the verses. Once she completes the copywork, I hole punch it and put it in a 3-ring folder so that we have another record of her verses. Plus, it is nice to be able to look back and see how her penmanship improves! As we move along and cover more verses, I will continue to add them.

You can download the docs by clicking on each of the images.

FYI: The curriculum does come with blank pages to use for the copywork. However, I made these to coordinate with the memory verse pages above. Plus, I just think they are so darn cute and my kids are loving them!

My Cowboy Captain America

Just had to share!!! Check out my little Cowboy Captain America and all his muscles! JI LOVES to wear this costume and I thought it was the cutest thing when he came down a few weeks ago wearing it along with his cowboy hat announcing that he was going to save the day!   :-)

The Thumb Guards & Finger Guards are Back!!!

Stop Thumb Sucking with Thumb Guard Kit for Two Hands (Size Small/Ages 3-4)I am so tired of seeing my little boys sucking their fingers and thumbs!!! We have finally decided that NOW is the time for them to stop. So, we pulled out our finger guards and thumb guards. These things worked like magic for our older set of twins. One was a thumb sucker and the other was a finger sucker. We put the guards on them for ONE month and that was the END of the thumb/finger sucking for them!!!! Yay!!!!!

So, on to the younger set of twins….we gave the guards a shot with them last year. After one month, JI had stopped sucking his fingers. However, TJ was a different story! He would suck whatever finger was not in the guard. So, we took the guards off JI and put them on TJ. Unfortunately the peer pressure proved to be too much for JI. When he saw his twin sucking his fingers (that weren't in the guard), he started back up again.

Stop Finger Sucking with Finger Guard Kit (Size Small/Ages 3-4)
So, our new solution is to put both a finger guard and thumb guard on both of TJ’s hands...yes, four guards total. (Take a close look at the pic below.) We already had two thumb guards and one finger guard, so we decided to purchase another finger guard so that TJ would have one for each hand. They are a bit pricey, but  I figure it is way cheaper than having to pay for braces!!!

Besides I have had proven results with 3 out of my 4 finger/thumb suckers {if you don’t count the peer pressure relapse!}  :-)

You can read more about our past experiences with the thumb guards and finger guards by clicking the links below:

My first post with details about how we got ourselves into this whole thumb sucking ordeal. (Now that I look back at it, the post is kinda funny…well, not that funny since we are STILL reaping what was sown)    :-)    Plus, I have more details about our awesome success with the guards for our first set of twins.

The second post was an update from our first attempts at the guards with the younger twins. It showcases our progress (with JI) and lack of progress (with TJ) and how we tried to remedy it.

The third post is about JI’s peer pressure relapse.

I will keep you up to date with our current progress on my quest to STOP the last of the finger and thumb suckers in my house!!!!   :-)

READER COMMENT UPDATE: I was informed by a reader that there is another product called "Thumbuddy To Love" that can be used to help with thumb-sucking. It seems to be a book and a coordinating thumb puppet with the character choices of either Ballerina Sue or Fireman Fred. Though I am not sure if it would work with my son, I really like the concept and idea!!!

Homemade Easter Hat

We made this super cute Easter hat. Would you believe that it is made from a paper plate and paper bowl?!?!?! KJ had such a blast making this and I am so pleased with how it turned out. The best part is that it was super easy!!!!
album 3.4.10 042
We were inspired to make this super cute Easter hat after reading these two really cute books: Queen of Easter and Miz Fannie Mae's Fine New Easter Hat.
Queen of Easter (Ann Estelle Stories)Miz Fannie Mae's Fine New Easter Hat
Both books are about a special surprise that they find in Easter hats! (You can read my review of Miz Fannie Mae's Fine New Easter Hat over on my "Brown Like Me" Book Review blog!) We enjoyed both books...so much so that we made our own Easter hat. So, here are the instructions in case you want to make your own as well!

You will need:
a sturdy paper plate
a sturdy paper bowl
paint
ribbon
fake flowers
glue

Here is what we did: First turn the plate and bowl upside down. Put the bowl on the plate and trace the circle. Cut about an inch or so inside the circle...this makes it so that your hat is actually wearable!
album 3.4.10 001

Next, glue the bowl to the plate. We used a glue gun...because we didn't want to wait long for it to dry. Then, paint the plate and bowl. We used a glossy, yellow acrylic paint so that we could get away with just one coat.

album 3.4.10 006

Finally, once the hat is dry, embellish it! KJ picked out the ribbon and the flowers and we attached it all using the glue gun.
album 3.4.10 042

Check out KJ wearing her homemade Easter bonnet!!! Believe it or not, I think she really has plans for wearing it to church Easter Sunday!!!

We got the idea for this project from Crafts For Easter. I am linking this up with Kiddos Create, stART, and We Made It! Showcase!

The Jelly Bean Prayer {FREE printable cards}

I can remember the Jelly Bean Prayer from when I was a little girl. I had hoped to use it with my kids last Easter, but I didn’t get around to it in time. So, this year I have gotten a head start!

The Jelly Bean Prayer {with FREE printable cards}

The poem reads:
Red is for the blood He gave.
Green is for the grass He made.
Yellow is for the sun so bright.
Orange is for the edge of night.
Black is for the sins we made.
White is for the grace He gave.
Purple is for His hour of sorrow.
Pink is for a new tomorrow.
And handful of jelly beans,
Colorful and sweet,
Is a prayer, a promise,
A loved one’s treat!
Happy Resurrection Sunday!

To make the jelly bean jars you need:
a jar (I recycled a Starbucks bottle)
jelly beans
ribbon

Directions: Fill the jar with jelly beans. Attach the poem using the ribbon. This makes a great little gift for your little ones on Easter. Plus, it is a great illustration of our risen Savior! I just can't wait to give these to my kids for Easter!!!

The Jelly Bean Prayer {FREE Printable Cards}

As you can see, I have three different versions. I could not decide which I liked best…so I included all three. Where I found the time to be indecisive and make all three…I have no idea!?!?!  :-)  Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the selection!  :-)

Princesses & Frogs Game

PrincessesAndFrogsBelieve it or not, my 6 year old daughter even enjoys playing the Bug Race Game. So, after I made the Racing Racecars game for the boys, she insisted on me making one for her...so I figured I would share it too. Of course she wanted a princess theme. So, this is what I came up with. (Click the image to download.)

Although my daughter does not really need practice with this, the game does help with number recognition and counting with a die. Roll the die, count the dots, and mark off or circle that number on the flower path. The object of the game is for all of the princesses to make it over to catch and kiss her frog prince. As each princess makes it over to the frog (all the numbers on her path are circled or marked off) add a star or the princesses number in the box. Continue rolling the die and marking the path until all the paths are complete.

Oh, the box that says me is so that you can glue on a photo of your little princess so that she can play the game as well...or you can just leave it like it is.

Laminate, cover with clear contact paper, or slide into a page protector so that you can play the gave over and over. (Saves on printing multiple copies!)
