Sunflower Crafts Galore!!!

We have had a blast with sunflower crafts. In fact, I would venture to say that we got a big carried away! Many of the sunflowers that we made were inspired by illustrations from various books about sunflowers. Check out some of the sunflowers that we made and the books that inspired us!!

This first sunflower was super easy to make. I cut out petals and the kids used brown paint to paint the bottom of a paper plate. They used q-tips and black paint to add the spots. This sunflower craft was inspired by the book The Sunflower Parable. We absolutely LOVED this book!!! It is about a little boy who hopes to grow sunflowers that reach to heaven. In the most simple, yet clever way the story explains our Father's garden and the process of spreading His message. There is a Bible verse to correspond with each page of the book. We LOVE reading this book!

Our second sunflower was also inspired by The Sunflower Parable. However, we mad the flower a bit differently. Like before I cut the petals and the kids painted the paper plate brown. However, we used some bubble wrap and black paint to make a pattern on the plate. 

This next sunflower was totally inspired by the cute little fold out book, Big Yellow Sunflower. Again we used the same petals and brown plate. However, we also used brown, black, and gray construction paper. We hole punched the paper...I did most of the hole punching... But, first I put a ring of glue around the outer rim of the plate. KJ dropped on the brown dots. Next, we spread glue on the remaining part of the plate and she dropped on the black dots. Once dry, I used the glue to make the flower pattern and she dropped on the gray dots. If you look closely, the illustration on the front cover of the book as well as inside the book are made from dots using a hole puncher. Doesn't this TOTALLY look like the flower on the book?!?! {You can see a photo of the book cover in the widget below or by clicking the book title above}.

Our final two sunflowers were inspired from the book This Is the Sunflower. Not so much the cover, but on one particular page in the book, the center of the sunflower seemed to resemble the bubble wrap design. So for these last two sunflowers, the kids painted paper plates yellow. I cut the plate down to a petal shape and the kids used black paint and bubble wrap on the center.

 

After we made our different flowers, we taped them onto the wall. The kids LOVE our sunflower garden. I have to admit that I really like it too! It is a nice, bright, fun spot in our kitchen!
