I think there is something special and almost magical about eating food that you have grown yourself. Last year we planted
our very first garden and I was so amazed that I was able to go out in my yard and have everything I needed to
make a salad! So, needless to say, I was thrilled to get our garden started this year! I pulled out my
Square Foot Garden Book
and got to work. These are the beds that we used. This year we planted lettuce, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers in our square foot garden.

I used leftover faux wood blind slats (from last year’s garden) to make the grid. I connected them with zip ties. Even though the tomatoes are far from needing cages, I went ahead and put them in to protect them {and the peppers} from stray balls (can’t be too careful with four boys who love to play ball!)
We also have a small area in our side yard that we planted snap peas, beans, cucumbers, more zucchini, and more squash. We had
so much success with our
Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter
last year, the we got another one, as well as a
Topsy Turvy Strawberry Planter
.

On our other side yard, we have more
strawberries (in a bed) as well as two
blueberry plants.
I can’t wait for our first harvest!!!! Can you tell I am excited?!?!?! :-)

It looks great! Last year my daughter and planted some tomatoes in the topsey turvey and it was so awesome. I'm glad to hear it works will for berries too. We'll have to try that out next year. Berry season is already over here.
ReplyDeleteThis year my hubby wasn't deployed so he ripped out the vine-like things that filled our flower bed and decided to plant a mini-garden. We have more tomatoes, some peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and some herbs. We've already got some huge tomatoes and I can't wait for them be ready to eat. I wish we would've planted lettuce so we could have a complete salad too.
so funny. Our Topsy Turvy tomatoe planter was a total bust last year. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteCool, we're just getting ours going too, hopefully no more cold weather here!
ReplyDeleteSo this square foot garden idea---do they grow okay that close together? Please report on this because I think I am wasting a ton of space! I am so sad to report this year I decided not to plant excessively since really one zucchini plant and 2 tomato plants produce enough for us...I think they are dying and I have no back ups! UGH!
