Enjoying the Great Outdoors

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Last week we had some really nice days! So, we made the most of it and had some family time outside. Husby grilled and we even ate outside. It was the first time that all five of the kiddos ate together at their little picnic table! Check out my little fellas digging in what will hopefully, someday be a thriving garden...that has yet to be seen. For now it is just a bunch of weeds!

When I said we took advantage of the nice weather, I mean it in every sense of the word. Husby even gave the boys haircuts outside! Look at little JI sitting still for his trim!
I just love spending time together with my lil family!

Preschool Corner: Puzzles & Wedgits

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.

This is my very first time posting for Preschool Corner and I am super excited. I have 2/3 kiddos at the preschool age. My oldest set of twins, DC and JJ will be four years old next month. My daughter will be six in October. Since her birthday is late, we ended up starting early and she is doing kindergarten level work...even though technically she is only preschool age. (I guess that is the beauty of homeschooling...you can just go at your child's pace.) Okay, enough rambling and onto what we did last week.

Since I didn't really think ahead to this post, I didn't take very many pictures of our preschool time last week. But, here is what I did get. The boys were very excited to get to work on their Leap Frog counting puzzle. They did need a bit of help, but they were able to do alot more on their own than in the past.

The kids LOVE playing with Wedgits. A friend let us borrow her set and now my kids don't want to give them back. The idea is that you figure out how to copy designs printed on cards using the different sized blocks. It is very logic oriented. My daughter LOVES to figure out how to copy the buildings on the design cards. The boys, however, just love making tall towers and knocking them over! It's just something about boys and knocking stuff over! :-)

We are currently learning about insects and the letter I. We are making some really cool insect stuff that I will (hopefully) remember to take pictures of for next weeks Preschool Corner post!

Be sure to check out Preschool Corner for more great preschool ideas as well as my other website for free online preschool/kindergarten resources.

Tot School~21 months

Tot School
~JI and TJ are 21 months~

This is my very Tot School post. We have been doing "Tot School" for awhile, I just have never posted about it. But I am now hoping to make it a part of my weekly posts! Since this was my first time posting about it, I didn't get very many pictures. But, the highlight from Tot School last week was playing with the bottle tops that I have collected.

I always save the little plastic bottle tops off of EVERYTHING. I use them for all kinds of things from counting to keeping the kid's paint colors separate. So, with my ever growing stash, I decided to let the babies play with some of them and some plastic containers. (I save those too!!!) :-) They played with them for at least 30 minutes!!! Then, of course, their big brothers wanted to join in!

I will try to take more pics this week!

Be sure to check out Tot School for more great toddler ideas.

How to Make Links Open a New Window

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Do you get frustrated when you click on a link and it takes you away from the original page you were on? Do you want your readers to be able to click on and go to your links without leaving your site? Well, I have been there and I know your frustration. So, I figured out how to prevent these things from happening and it is pretty easy. All you have to do is edit a bit of the html code. Once you have attached your link, go to the html portion and you should find code beginning with a href that is enclosed in less than and greater than symbols < >.

Between the second set of quotations (") and the greater than symbol (>) you need to add the following:

target="_blank"

That's it!! Now your readers should be able to click on and go to attached links without being taken away from your original window.

Opposites (according to my kids)

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
For awhile my daughter would talk about what she did yesternight and I had no idea what she was talking about until I realized...yesternight is the opposite of yesterday. So, I was reminded about my daughter's cute little opposite, when JJ came up with his own too. The other day, he was playing with his cars and he told me that one car landed upside down and the other landed upside up. How cute!!

Bounce House Fun

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Last week my mother-in-law was in town to visit and I took all the kids to an indoor bounce house with the ladies from my MOPS group. It was so much fun! The babies LOVED going down the slide, but it was so much work trying to help them get up there! Needless to say, I got a little workout myself! I just love this pic of KJ trying to show little bro, JI, the ropes! Would you believe that with all this bounce house fun, I thought I had lost DC? I found him...playing in the little kiddie corner with the baby toys...go figure!!!

Uggghhhhh!!!!!

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
So, when I got the babies up this morning I was in for a big, stinky, messy surprise!!! I noticed these smeared stains on both of their beds. So, originally I thought that maybe one of them threw up. (They often poop in their diapers first thing in the morning, so the smell wasn't my first clue-in to what really happened.) Have you ever had your kid to go SO much in their diaper that it starts creeping out of the top of the back up the diaper...all up their back? Well, when TJ turned around I knew exactly what was smeared all over the beds. Yes, you guessed it. Uggghhhh!!!!! Once I set foot into the room, I began to see little kernels of corn sporadically spread all over the floor. (We had corn with dinner last night). Unfortunately, I am almost certain that my innocent little fellas probably ate some of the corn...that had made its way through all parts of their little digestive systems...including the very last part! Uggghhhh!!!! How nasty is that? I am still trying to clean up and get everything washed. Right now, the windows are open so I can fumigate the room! :-) Gotta love being a mama!!!

Printable (Wallet-sized) Dirty Dozen List

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
So, I actually began posting about my "green" experience last year. One of the first changes I made was to our diet. In that post, I talked about the "Dirty Dozen," which represents the top twelve produce items that you REALLY want to try to buy organic due to the pesticides used on them. You can click here to see that post. I have not gone totally organic by any means, but I at least try to make sure that I when I purchase any items from the "Dirty Dozen" that I buy organic. But, one problem that I run into is that I can't really remember what is and is not on the list. Occasionally I remember to jot down a note to myself on my grocery list, but most times I forget. So, I was on the hunt for a little wallet sized list that I could keep in my wallet. I usually don't forget my wallet, so I figured I would be safe going that route! :-) At the Environment Working Group I was able to find just what I needed. They have a small printable version of the Dirty Dozen that you can download to keep in your wallet. Click here to download yours!

Green Mama...in the Making

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Alright!!! So, I have been on a "green" journey for awhile now. I have done quite a bit of reading, learning, and experimenting with topics ranging from food to recycling; from cleaning products to skin care and many other topics in between. I needed a place to keep up with all my discoveries and findings. Plus, I want to document some of the little things that I am doing each week. (It holds me accountable!) So, I decided to add it to my main blog here! That way, I can share my journey and what I am doing to be a "Green Mama."

I still have a LONG way to go, but I am a "Green Mama...in the making!" Want to follow along? Feel free to grab my button. It will link you directly to all of my "Green Mama" posts!

DISCLAIMER: Please realize that I am a self-educated mother. I am NOT a doctor or expert. I am just sharing what I am learning and what is working for me and my family.

My New "It's 5pm & I don't know what to make for dinner" Recipe

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
I have found a great, easy, fast recipe that I am falling in love with. I have made it a few times already. It is officially, my new, "It's 5pm and I don't know what to make for dinner" recipe! I make sure that I keep the ingredients on hand so that I can whip it up in a matter of minutes. The best part is that the kids and Husby love it! What is it? Six Can Chicken Tortilla Soup! I found the recipe here. But, here are my slight adjustments:

Ingredients:
1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
1 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth
1 (10 ounce) can cream of chicken
1 (10 ounce) can chunk chicken (I use the kind from Costco)
1 (15 ounce) can black beans
1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chili peppers, drained
cumin, chili powder, cilantro, garlic powder, salt & pepper to taste

Directions:
Put everything into a large saucepan or stock pot. Simmer over medium heat until chicken is heated through. Serve over tortilla chips and top with shredded cheddar cheese.

My Tips: Be sure to add the seasonings to your taste and make sure to serve OVER tortilla chips. (The chips adsorb some of the liquid.)

How to Make a Blog Background

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Those who keep up with my blog have probably noticed that I have been making changes. My latest discovery is that I can create my own blog background. I used a tutorial that I found at Cutest Blog on the Block. As I have mentioned before, I have figured out how to use Photoshop and I LOVE it! It has been one of the best finds that I have made...aside from my bread machines and my juicer! (I found it brand new about a year ago at the Goodwill for about $20). Anyhow, I used it to create my background by following the instructions on the tutorial mentioned above. I did adjust the widths a bit so that it would fit with my header. I didn't really want to add all the flair suggested in the tutorial, but overall, I am pleased! So, if you are trying to figure out this whole blog design thing, be sure to check out their site. They have lots of "secrets" about blogging to share, plus lots of free premade designs!

No High 5's in This House

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Okay, so I just HAD to share. My husband has taught the BABIES to give "pounds." For those of you who don't know, it is like giving a high 5 except you do it with a closed fist. Some people also call it "knuckles." It is so cute. Whenever I ask the babies for a high 5, they now say "pound" and want to give a pound rather than five! I guess Husby is trying to get them indoctrinated early! :-) KJ has even taught them a "baby-version" called the "thumb pound." Too too cute!!!

The Fire Station

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Yesterday I took the big three to the fire department with our local homeschool group. I had no idea that they would show the kids so much. I thought they would get to see the fire truck and that would be about it. Well, not only did they see the fire trucks and fire engines (there is a difference...fire trucks have ladders on them and fire engines do not), they got to "put out a fire" with a real fire fighter hose...all while wearing firefighter costumes. After being adored in "official firefighter gear" and using the hose, the boys both announced that they were now "real firefighters!" They also had a simulation of a smoky room so the kids could practice crawling out. They got to check if a bedroom door was warm, put a blanket under the door and crawl out of a window. They pretended that their clothes were on fire and "stopped, dropped, and rolled." They even got to watch a fireman suit up in his gear. They did make a good point that I didn't even think about. They mentioned that sometimes kids get scared and run from the firefighter rather than running to the firefighter. So, the fireman put his gear on piece by piece and explained each part so that the kids could see him "transforming" into the firefighter. They said they do it this way so that hopefully the kids can see that there is no need to be scared if they see a firefighter. I never really thought about it, but I appreciate them allowing the kids to really watch the transformation. I think the part that I found most amusing was the talking fire hydrant. It was pretty cool! The kids also got see Sparky the fire dog. As I said, I didn't expect it to be so informative and well-planned out. It actually got me to thinking about the fact that we don't really have a fire plan; nor have I really taught the kids what to do in the case of a fire. So, I did some looking and I found this site. I hope to use it to teach the kids some fire safety! Btw, don't you just love my cool firefighter DC?!?!?! He didn't want to take his shades off!

My Other Blog

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.

For those of you who don't know, I have another blog that I have been working on for quite awhile now. It is a collection of all the online homeschool resource sites that I have found or that other people have told me about. I had been saving them all under "My Favorites" on my computer. The list became quite long and then I decided to put them on a blog instead...that way I could take them off "My Favorites" list but still be able to find them. I sorted them by subject and then I started having fun. I decided to turn it into a public blog that could be used as a resource for other homeschooling moms. Even if you don't homeschool, you can probably find some sites that you could use for your kiddos.

So, feel free to go over and check it out. I still have tons more sites to add, but it is a work in progress. I will continue to add sites as I find them. If you have other sites that you think should be added, please feel free to leave me a comment. You can click here to check it out!

I am Amazed!

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
I am amazed! The babies have really caught onto this whole sleeping in toddler bed thing! I tell them it is time to go to bed and they happily run over to their individual beds and plop down. Now, there is usually a bit of crying once I close the door, but this is a VAST difference from how it was when I switched the boys over to toddler beds. It was almost as if in their very own way they were rebelling. It was months before they actually slept in their beds. I would often find them asleep on the floor...many times right by the door. But, the babies have caught on and they have caught on quickly! I am so proud of the babies! They never cease to amaze me! This is a pic I got of them during one of their naps. Yes, they did get into a few things...as you can see! They were able to pull down the big, half-empty, Costco-size box of diapers.

It IS Genetic!!!

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Well, Husby believes that he has proven that it IS genetic! He heard some noises upstairs a few nights ago and was surprised to find DC lying on our bedroom floor just outside the bathroom. Trying to figure out what was going on, Husby soon discovered that DC had gone to the bathroom...in front of the tub in OUR bathroom. Husby came downstairs saying it is all your fault!!! I had no idea what was going on. Apparently DC was sleep-walking and he stood in front of our bathtub...thinking he was in front of the toilet! To make matters worse, he stood there and went...got his socks all wet...and then attempted to go back to bed. But, he didn't even make it back to his room. He laid down right outside our bathroom door on the carpet...wet socks and all.

So, in case you haven't ready my other post about this, I used to sleep-walk as a young girl. This whole episode reminds me of stories my parents have told me about my sleep-walking adventures. Many times they found me asleep on the steps. I would actually make it to the bathroom and go...and then turn the wrong way leaving the bathroom door...and would be found on the stairs (rather than my bed) the next morning. Another time, I was sleep-walking and walked right into the den and sat on the TV that my parents were watching. Yet another time, I walked to the sliding door and stood behind the curtains. My parents told me that on that occasion they frantically searched for me and were just glad that I didn't somehow unlock the door and actually go outside. I guess that means that I was asleep standing up! I don't quite know how that happens, but they said I did it! So, I guess DC got it honest! Perhaps Husby is right about it being genetic!

From 5 to 3

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
I am proud to announce that I have gone from 5 down to 3. JJ told me the other day that he was big enough to wear big boy underwear to bed rather than his pull-up. Since he had been waking up with a dry pull-up, I decided what the heck! So, I put extra blankets on the bed and put both of the boys in underwear for the night. DC woke us up in the middle of the night declaring that he was wet. JJ, on the other had, woke up the next morning completely dry! When I told him how proud I was of him, he said, "I told you I was ready to sleep in my underwear!" I guess he knew what he was talking about! He was dry for three nights straight! When he had his first accident, he came into my room and told me that he was wet. He continues to adamantly acknowledge that he was just sweating and that he did NOT pee on himself! :-) Now, we are sure to make him go to the bathroom just before bed and we wake him up to go again just before Husby and I go to bed.

We are waiting for DC to consistently have a dry pull-up before letting him try again. But, in the meantime, I down from 5 to 3...from 5 kids in diapers/pull-ups down the only 3! I should calculate how much money I am saving by only having to buy diapers/pull-ups for three kids rather than five! Oh the day when they are all in underwear!!!

The Angels in Heaven are Rejoicing

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Today we celebrated the Passover. It was our very first time having a Passover dinner. I did not do extensive research on what is served for a Passover dinner, but we had lamb chops, brown rice, unleavened bread, and grape juice. We decided that I would make the meal and that Husby would explain Passover to the kids. He taped red paper on the door frame to symbolize the blood that was the sign for the angel of death to "passover" the house and not kill the first born. He explained it in a fairly kid-friendly manner and even made connections to VeggieTales. The kids told us that Jesus is the lamb and that He died on the cross for our sins. Now, with our family something funny happens even in the midst of the serious. As we were eating our Passover dinner, KJ sat chewing her meat. Finally she said, "Am I ever going to be able to swallow this?" I have to admit, it was my very first time making lamb and some of it was a bit tough! :-) But, JJ and the babies seemed to really like it!

Although we were very excited to celebrate Passover by having our very first Passover dinner, something even more special happened tonight. After getting the boys to bed, Husby spent some time with KJ. She has told us a few times before that she had asked Jesus into her heart. Well, Husby talked to her and sure enough, she understood what it meant. In fact, she told him that she had asked Jesus into her heart many times, especially when she sins. Husby explained to her that once she asks Jesus into her heart, He stays there and she doesn't have to ask him to come back in every time she does something wrong...she just needs to ask for forgiveness. After getting that all straightened out, Husby asked her if she remembered when she first asked Jesus into her heart. She didn't really remember. He told her that maybe Mommy and Daddy could help her remember. So, she asked for me to come up. Husby let me know that he thought this would be it! So in anticipation, he grabbed the video camera and of course, I got my camera. Fortunately, Husby had her explain everything about sin and Jesus and asking Him into her heart prior to me coming upstairs, because she started acting goofy once the cameras came out. (I know...I know...but I am a mama and I wanted a pic to document the moment!) So, we had her explain what it meant to ask Jesus into her heart (with the camera rolling) and she did it. She asked Jesus to come into her heart! Afterwards, Husby told her that when even one person asks Jesus into their heart that all the angels in Heaven rejoice. I chimed in saying that there was a party going on in Heaven! This was indeed a big day for KJ!

On Wednesday, April 8, 2009 (Passover) our Princess, KJ, accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior!!!

We are rejoicing right along with the angels! We can't wait until tomorrow so that she can call the grandparents and extended family to let them know the good news so that they can rejoice with us too!

We Had To Do It!!!

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Well, we had to do it...move the babies to their toddler beds that is. They both can climb up and onto the side of the cribs. I have seen both of them do it at least twice. Fortunately, they haven't fallen. I just happen to be coming into the room just as they are about to go over...each time. So, the other day I found TJ straddling the rail and that was the last straw. I decided then and there that they were going to sleep in their toddler beds. But, if you recall, we tried this once before with the babies and it was a complete disaster.

Well, a friend of mine clued me in on a little tip. She put a door handle with a lock on her sons door. So, Husby took the handle off our bathroom door (has a lock on it) and switched it with the handle from the babies door (no lock). Now, when he put the handle on the babies door, be put the lock on the outside rather than the inside. This way, we can basically lock the babies in their room. With the door closed, they can't see what is going on down the hall. So, knowing that we had the lock, I wasn't as petrified at the thought of moving them to the toddler beds again. So, that is what I did and it worked great!!! They cried for awhile and then we heard them kicking the wall. But, they eventually fell asleep and it was virtually painless for me. Boy, what a transition from last time!

We did make sure that the room was completely safe for them...since they would have full reign of the room all night long. Just before bed we opened up their door so that we could hear them during the night. We put the baby gate up at the door so that they couldn't come out if they happened to wake up in the middle of the night. I am pleased to report that it was a success. I think we can take the cribs apart now without the possibility of having to put them back together again! Here are some pics of the babies. This is how we found them just before Husby and I went to bed.
This is how Husby found them when he got up the following morning. We do have two toddler beds in the room. I guess they like sleeping together too!
I guess this means that my babies are babies no more! I say that with mixed emotions!

Easter Egg Hunt

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
This past Saturday our neighborhood had a little Easter egg hunt for the kids at our community park. It was really cute because it was the babies' very first egg hunt. They didn't really know what was going on. They each picked up two eggs and their were good. Check them out:

It actually turned out to be really good that they did get those eggs...TJ in particular. See, the day before, his twin, JI, hit him in the eye with his fork. I ended up taking him to the Urgent Care after the egg hunt and that little blue egg was a life saver. He sat in my lap and played with that thing for the entire time we were in the waiting room.
