Making Faces

So, in effort to keep the kids occupied for awhile, I came up with the idea of pita pocket faces. We made pita pockets (gotta love the bread machine) from scratch and then the kids got to make their own face. I put out peanut butter, jelly, sliced bananas, thin slices of apple, cheerios, and raisins. Here is one of our edible pieces of art! :-) It must have taken over an hour for the kids to decorate and eat their faces, but it gave me just enough time to hop on the computer for awhile! As moms, you gotta do what you gotta do! :-)

"No Mom Allowed"

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Have you ever had one of those days were everything just seems to go wrong? Well, I was having one of those days a few days ago. Unfortunately, I took my frustrations out on the kids. Amidst my frustrations, KJ asked me how to spell "allowed." Having no clue of her reason for wanting to know how to spell the word, I slowly yelled out the letters. (She was writing in her room and I was in the babies' room changing diapers.) So, I as I headed downstairs to start lunch, I noticed the following sign on KJ's closed door: I asked her why I couldn't go in her room. She said that she made the sign because I was so angry at her. Boy, kids really know how to put you in check! Realizing that I had taken out my frustrations on the kids, I sat them down and apologized for yelling at them. Afterwards, KJ said, "Mommy, I am sorry for what I did too." I said, "what did you do?" She said, "I made you angry." I replied, "Sweetheart, you didn't do anything to make mommy angry." I reminded them that yelling is not the way to handle anger or frustration. (I was really reminding myself...not them!) So, after hugs and apologies, I asked her if I could go in her room again. She said yes. I took down the sign, but I have saved it as a reminder...

FYI...she ran out of space trying to spell "allowed"...so, she wrote "upwards." We are working on that. :-) Regardless, I still understood what she was saying and it pierced my heart!

Do My Kids Watch Too Much TV?

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
So, we were sitting at the breakfast table and the kids began to complain about being cold. All of a sudden KJ announced that she needs a Snuggie. All three of the big kids began to chime in about all the "wonderful" things about the Snuggie. I have to admit that it was a pretty ingenious idea...wish I would have thought of it. But, it almost sounded as if they had been hired to advertise for the armed blanket!

"It gives you the freedom to use your arms."

"We can eat popcorn and have movie night and still be warm."

"It is perfect for reading a book or talking on the phone."

"Oh yeah, mommy, when you get up you can still be really warm."

"Don't forget that it even comes with a book light."

"Mommy, can we get a Snuggie?"

So, what do think? Do my kids watch too much TV? Have they totally convinced you that you need a Snuggie? If not, check out the infomercial for it by clicking here.

Hand-me-downs

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Okay, so here is another funny conversation we had today. We were all sitting at the table for dinner and all of a sudden JJ asked, "Why didn't the babies get new shirts for Christmas?"

I reply, "Well, son, they don't need new shirts."

"Why not?"

"Well, they get to wear all of your and your brother's old clothes" I stated. (Unfortunately for the babies, they rarely get anything new at this point...well, I guess it is new to them, but they don't know that their big brothers once won just about all their clothes...But I guess their big brothers realize that Santa didn't leave the babies nearly as much as them! Call me cheap or frugal, but I see it as a way to same money while I can...one of the perks of having two sets of twin boys...hand-me-downs!) Anyhow, back to the convo...

He looked a little perplexed. I begin to explain that he used to wear the very shirts that the babies had on. He sat silently and then asked, "Did the shirts shrink?"

As I am laughing my husband begins to explain that the shirts didn't shrink, but that he grew. The mind of a child...

Just thought I would share!!! It reminded me of the following poem:

Hand Me Downs
Author: Bob Zanger

I’m always wearing hand-me-downs.
I don’t get stuff that’s new.
My mom won’t take me shopping.
I don’t know what to do.
The dresses always fit me fine,
but high heels give me blisters.
It’s not that easy growing up,
a boy with older sisters.

NO, I don't put my daughter's clothes on any of the boys, but I still think this poem is cute!

The Overwhelmingly Awesome Responsibility

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
The other night I was home alone with the kiddos getting them ready for bed. Once everyone was fast asleep, I went to check in on each one. As I made my rounds, the silence of the evening got me to thinking about the HUGE responsibility it is having kids...not so much the physical responsibility; you know feeding them and clothing them. I was thinking more about things like guiding them into knowing and loving Jesus, teaching right from wrong, disciplining them, protecting them...the stuff that REALLY takes extra effort.

As I looked at the cute little faces, I was overwhelmed with gratitude and fear. Yes, fear. I began to think about all the aspects of their lives that are hugely impacted by me. As the emotions of this awesome responsibility began to set it, I was reminded by something that my friend Tony told me. One of the greatest things you can do for your children is to pray for them. She sent me a list of Bible verses to pray over children that she received from a friend. I also have a prayer calendar that guides me in daily prayer for my kids. I now have a copy of it posted on one of my kitchen cabinets and another copy that I keep inside my Bible or journal.

So, although I really don't do New Year's Resolutions, I do plan to be more consistent in my daily prayers for my kiddos...not just the "thank you for my kids" prayer, but really praying over detailed aspects of their little lives. So, want to join me? Here is the link for the prayer calendar so that you can pray specifically for the little one(s) in your life. Also, here is the email with the list of Bible verses from my friend Tony:

That they will know Christ early in life (Psalm 63:1, II Timothy 3:15)
That they will have a hatred for sin (Psalm 97:10)
That they will be caught when guilty (Psalm 119:71, Ecclesiastes 8:11)
That they will be protected from the evil one in each area of their lives: spiritual, emotional, physical (John 17:15)
That they will have a responsible attitude in all their interpersonal relationships (Danie. 6:3)
That they will respect those in authority over them (Romans 13:1)
That they will desire the right kind of friends (Proverbs 1:10-11)
That they will be kept from the wrong mate and saved for the right one (II Corinthians 6:14-17)
That they, as well as those they marry, will be kept pure until marriage (I Corinthians 6:18-20)
That they will learn to totally submit to God and resist Satan (James 4:7)
That they will be single hearted, willing to be sold out to Jesus Christ (Romans 12:1-2)
That they will be hedged in so they cannot find their way to wrong people or places (Hosea 2:6)

Your children are never too young for you to begin praying for them in these areas. If you have a daughter, even if she is only a day old, chances are that her husband is already born. In today's world (let alone tomorrow's) don't you think they need all the pray support they can get? What if you will not be here when your children are old enough to marry? You can lay the foundation NOW. I know that I am living today on the prayers of my grandmothers who are no longer here. Prayer is the most awesome form of time travel! You can go back in the past and forgive old hurts that have sprung up from a root of bitterness. You can go into the future and pray for your children and your grandchildren.

Psalm 78
1 O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old-
3 what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.
5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
8 They would not be like their forefathers—a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.

Christmas Reflection

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
As I was talking to my sister, I was reminded about a very cute comment that my son, JJ, made. He actually made the comment a number of times leading up to Christmas, but it always seemed to be in the middle of the night. He would get up to use the bathroom. Afterwards he would stop by our room to announce, "All I want for Christmas is the Lord" and then he would go back to bed. I thought it was really cute. In fact, one morning I reminded him of what he said during the night. He began to explain that since he couldn't see Jesus all he wanted for Christmas was a Jesus doll...so that he could see the Lord. When he said that, I couldn't help but chuckle. I just love the innocence of children! Believe it or not, my sister found a Jesus doll. Check it out here.

Flight Frenzy

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
It has been awhile since I have posted and I have good reason! :-) We went out of town and got back late New Year's Eve. It was quite a trip to say the least...filled with sick kids.

So, we started our trip off great. The kids did WONDERFUL on the plane...so much so that I was thinking, "Hey, we could do this again!" Well, not after our trip back, which I will get to.

So, while we were away TJ got sick and threw up all over the place twice. The following morning, JI had thrown up in his crib. DC kept complaining about his tummy hurting all week and had a slight fever, but he never threw up. So, as the week went on, I was hoping that the rest of the kids would not get sick. Why was I so naive? When it comes to toys, they usually don't really want to share, but when it comes to being sick, sharing doesn't seem to be a problem at all! :-)

Anyhow, I was REALLY hoping that none of the kids would get sick on the plane. Well, my fear came true. We got on the plane for our return flight, which was about 3 hours. KJ had been complaining about her tummy hurting, so she sat in Daddy's lap. Well, about 5 minutes before the flight attendants were instructed to prepare for landing, KJ threw up all over the place. It got ALL over JJ. He screamed and the chain reaction began. DC screamed. JI started crying. TJ started crying. It was a mom's nightmare...crying kids on a plane, not to mention one throwing up. So, hubby was trying to get her into the bathroom and I was scrambling trying to get bags from the flight attendants all while trying to get JJ cleaned up. Hubby was in the bathroom with KJ and one of the flight attendants came to him and said, "I know you are having an emergency here, but we really need you to take your seat because we are about to land NOW...we are flying over houses right NOW!" So, we get back to our seats.

Once we land, we get the kids off the plane (with the help of our friends...THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!) and headed over to the bus for a 1 hour 45 minute drive home. We got onto the bus and hubby took care of KJ, while friends helped out with the other kids. Well, I thought I could relax, but all at once JJ who was resting his head, sat up and threw up all over the jacket of the friend sitting with him.

I was never so happy to get home. Hubby and I were up most of the night with KJ and JJ. We brought in the new year surrounded by kids throwing up. Hubby said, "Well, I am sure that our kids are not the only ones bringing in the new year sick." I laughed. Oh, the joys of parenting!!! Between unpacking, washing ALL the clothes and trying to get everyone back to normal, I just haven't had much time to blog. But, everyone is doing well now and things are getting back to normal.

See, I told you I had a good excuse! :-)
