Gardening: Saving Money & Water

For those of you who keep up with me, you probably know that I have started gardening. You also may be starting to realize that I am very cheap (frugal as my husband would say). But, in the book that I followed for two of my gardens, All New Square Foot Gardening, the author suggests leaving a bucket of sun-warmed water near the garden to use to water with. Well, it got me to thinking...how often do I just run the water while I wait for it to warm up...for example to wash dishes or to give the kid's a bath? Well, for me, it is quite often. So, what I have started to do is keep a bucket under the counter in the kitchen and bathroom. Whenever I am just running (wasting) water, I pull out the bucket. I keep it under the counter until it is full. Once it is full, I use that water to water the garden. Now, I do still have to pull out the hose and do some watering, but at least I am putting that water that I would have wasted to good use. Now that is what I am talking about....being green, saving water, AND saving money!!!

  1. Wow, that's pretty dedicated. I'm impressed. I'm not there yet, but I have incorporated a lot of green ideas into our home. Baby steps right?

  4. My parents live in Florida and they do this with their shower water - catching the excess as they wait for it to warm up. They get at least 2 gallons per shower and it goes right to the flower beds! One of our gardens is a hydroponic garden and every extra bit of water we can put towards the garden helps.
