The Slug Slayer

TonyR, this one is for you!!! I just had to share what happened a few weeks back!!!

In our backyard we have two large planter boxes. I decided to use the boxes to plant some vegetables. Having consulted a local nursery, I decided that at this time of the year I could attempt to grow cabbage, cauliflower, onions, lettuce, collard greens, and kale. So, in my efforts to avoid pesticides, I have done nothing in the way of getting rid of the pesky little bugs and worms and worst of all...slugs. So, within a week or so of planting my garden, I notice little slime marks on some of the leaves. I followed the advice of a fellow gardener (I don't think I should actually refer to myself as a gardener though ...hahaha). Anyhow, I was advised to go out just after dark to take a look at the garden to see just who those slime marks belonged to...you guessed it. SLUGS......yuck! I kind of wonder if I even want to eat any of the produce, knowing that slugs may have slithered on them. So, I go outside with my flashlight in hand. Boy was I shocked! I saw slug after slug after slug. So, armed with a can of soapy water, I used a little shovel to scoop up all the slugs I found. That evening I drowned 12 slugs. GROSS!!!! I cringed throughout the whole process and believe it or not, I actually went out and did it again the next night. Though I only found 4 that night, I soon decided that being the "slug-slayer" was NOT for me. So, the slugs have been feasting on my cabbage and cauliflower leaves. So far, the greens, kale, and lettuce have survived, despite my lack of action! :-) So, take a look at how well the one planter box is doing. The second picture is of one of the broccoli plants that is just struggling...don't laugh!! For Tony's sake, I decided not to include an picture of the little slimy creatures that are partially responsible for the demise! If you have any suggestions or ideas on ways to help out my poor plants without using pesticides, please, please let me know!!

Hiding God's Word

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
As a homeschooling mom, I often find myself so busy trying to teach "reading, writing, and arithmetic." Yes, we do Bible lessons, but I just feel like I need to focus more on instilling an authentic love for Jesus in my kids' hearts. I am laying the groundwork for them to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. For some reason, I have really been feeling the "burden" of this enormous honor!!!

So, in our lessons we have been learning about apples and the Fruit of the Spirit. We have done all kinds of apple related activies: taste tests, adding seeds, apple prints, fave apple surveys, Johnny Appleseed, etc. But, I have decided to be more proactive on the Biblical side of our lessons. What does that mean? Well, I often find that we do our Bible lessons and that is it. I get so wrapped up in the rest of the day that I fail to implement God and our Bible lessons into our everyday activities. So, what did I do about this? In practical terms, I decided to throw home decor out the window. I wrote out Bible scriptures that the kids and I are working on onto index cards and posted them on the cabinets in the kitchen. Just by being reminded of these scriptures, it will hopefully help me put more scriptures to memory and it reminds me to ask the kids their Bible verses throughout the day...rather than just during our "schooling" time. So, today it worked great! As the kids and I went about our daily activities, I made comments about how they were showing the fruits of the spirit. For example, during naptime/quiet time, I told KJ that she needed to use the fruit of self-control and stay in her room until quiet time was over. I told JJ that he needed to use the fruit of patience when he kept asking for ice cream after dinner. I praised KJ for using the fruit of kindness as she shared her brand new ball with her brother DC. We talked about how God is pleased when we use our fruits, so much so that I overheard KJ singing a little song that she made up on her own about the Fruits of the Spirit. Today, I felt like I was REALLY teaching my kids what they REALLY need to know!!!

So, how does the title, Hiding God's Word, come into play? To remind me to go over Bible verses with KJ before bed, we made a little book. (I love scrapbooking, but usually have little time to indulge myself.) On the cover, KJ titled it "Hiding God's Word in my Heart." As we add more scriptures, we will add more pages to the book for her to write and decorate. Check out the pic below of our page for Galatians 5:22-23.

The Dirty Dozen

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
I am so thrilled! I have been reading the book, "Healthy Child, Healthy World".

In the last few months, I have really tried to focus more on my role as the homemaker...specifically, my role in the kitchen. I realize that I dictate what my family eats. So, I have been more conscious of what I feed my family. I have already made the switch to predominantly whole wheat and whole grains. So, on to the next step...

So, why am I thrilled? Yesterday I made my first intentional purchase of organic produce. I went to the local co-op and purchased some apples, pears, potatoes, and a pomegranate. I felt so good about myself!!! You know what was surprising was that the cost was not as expensive as I thought it would be. The organic apples at the co-op were $1.89 per lb. (I saw conventional apples at the grocery store for $1.69 per lb. Their organic apples were $3.29 per lb!!!)

So, why the title, Dirty Dozen? The book I mentioned above (which has been a GREAT resource) lists the produce with the most and the least about of pesticides. Here is the list:

The Dirty Dozen (highest in pesticides):
  • peaches
  • apples
  • sweet bell peppers
  • celery
  • nectarines
  • strawberries
  • cherries
  • lettuce
  • grapes (imported)
  • pears
  • spinach
  • potatoes

The Cleanest 12 (lowest in pesticides):

  • onions
  • avocados
  • sweet corn (frozen)
  • pineapples
  • mangoes
  • sweet peas (frozen)
  • asparagus
  • kiwis
  • bananas
  • cabbage
  • broccoli
  • eggplant

"I think I need glasses"

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Do you have a child that seems to be accident prone? Well, I do. One of my boys has been to the Urgent Care and ER more that the rest of my kids combined. Can you guess who it is? You guessed...JJ! So, the day before yesterday the kids were outside riding their bikes in the driveway. JJ runs into the side of the garage door and falls off his bike. He runs into the bushes and falls off just missing some rocks. Then, he is just turning, while riding his bike and you guessed it, he fell off. Now, mind you, he DOES have training wheels! So, this last fall he hits his head on the concrete and gets yet another bump...on his forehead! After the sobbing and tears end, he says, "Mommy, why do I keep bumping into things...I think I need glasses...just like you!" I couldn't help but laugh. Now, mind you, the boy has been to the eye doctor and has perfect vision. So, here is yet another example of some of the daily drama here at my house! You gotta love it!!!

KJ's Birthday Cake

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
KJ celebrated her 5th birthday earlier this month. She requested a princess castle cake. So, I searched and searched for a princess castle cake and I ended up making it myself. I must admit I am quite proud of what I came up with. Take a look!!! If you notice, I also included the Disney's new princess coming in 2009, Princess Tianna.

The Questions They Ask

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
KJ asked me a question as we were frantically trying to get our shoes on and get out the door. She asked, "Why do shoes have tongues?" I paused, trying to come up with an answer. Then she followed up, "Why aren't they pink like my tongue?" So, not knowing what to tell her, I said, "That is a good question for the question book." What is the question book you ask? Well, my kids often come up with questions that I just don't know the answers to. So, we started the question book. I put all their questions in the book with the intentions of one day finding out the answers. Now, my ambition to find answers has not caught up with their curiousity. Sad to say, we have yet to find an answer a single question we have in the book thus far. Fortunately, for now they are just content knowing that I have recorded their questions in the infamous question book. Want to know some of the things we will hopefully discover...one day? Check out some of their questions:
  1. Do bees sting birds?

  2. How do popcorn seeds grow?

  3. How do slugs eat?

  4. Why do mushrooms grow in the yard?

  5. How is cheese made from milk?

  6. Are moths butterflies?

  7. Do whales have noses?

Got some answers to these question? Please save me some work and post your comments below!

I am in love...

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
...with a machine! Okay, let me clarify! Check out the pic below.

Do you know what this is? I guess the beautifully displayed bread probably gave it away. It is a Breadman bread machine. Mine is just like this, except it is white. So, wanna know how I ended up with this wonderful machine and what all it can do?

My mom had talked a bit about bread machines and how she would use them in her classroom to help teach measurement. Before the end of the day they would enjoy the fruit (or shall I say bread) of their labor. One day while in the Goodwill I found an old one for $10. Yes, I do shop in the Goodwill...and I am not ashamed to say it!! :-) Anyhow, I got the machine home, cleaned it up and tried it out. Boy, was I shocked! I had fresh bread in a matter of hours. Bread without preservatives and all the other stuff that is not so good for you...and it tasted great! But, the main part was that it was so easy. I just put in the ingredients (always put yeast in last) and programed it based on the type of bread you are making. Oh, I was in love! Well, the pan began to leak after a few months and I just had to get another one. So, I went to Craigslist. Would you believe that someone living just 10 minutes away had one for sale that was practically brand new. An older lady had used it one time. She used the wrong setting and didn't end up with bread and vowed never to use it again. So, she was selling it for $40...and did I mention it had only been used one time...practically brand new! And, it does so much more than the one I had before. So, now that you know how I ended up with my Breadman, let me tell you just how much better it is than the one I had. I can make all kinds of types of bread stuff with this machine. Take a look at this link to the Manual/Recipe Book.I have made dough, deserts, jams, and so much more. Trust me, just take a look at the recipes in the link. I now make all of our bread and I feel really good about it...like I am doing a little something extra nutritious for my kids. They eat 100% whole wheat bread almost everyday! For those of you who have a bread machine or are thinking about getting one, here is the recipe that I use for the bread:
  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 Tbsp powdered milk
  • 2 Tbsp canola oil or melted butter
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 2/3 cup Bob's Red Mill 100% whole wheat bread flour
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats (optional)
  • 1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
If you decide to try it out, I would love to know what you think! I never would have thought that making bread could be so easy! I know it sounds kind of corny, but being able to say that I make our bread from scratch makes me feel sort of...ummm...what is the word...Martha Stewartish! I am on my way to becoming a domestic diva! :-)

More is Caught than Taught

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
This has become so evident to me now that I have finally given up on trying to have separate lessons for my 5 year old and the 3 year olds. Things were getting pretty hectic trying to homeschool the big three all while fitting it into the babies schedule. Don't get me wrong, homeschooling your kids does take dedication, but I was spending WAY too much time trying to plan out two different lessons and get them to flow together to teach 3 kids. KJ is using the kindergarten version of My Father's World with some supplementing. The boys are using the 3 year old version of Hands on Homeschooling (I used this for KJ when she was 3). A homeschooling friend of mine overheard me talking about how time consuming things had become and she gave me some great advice that I want to share. She told me that when homeschooling younger kids, just make sure that you focus on the older child, but involve the younger children. So, rather than two separate lessons, one lesson focusing on what the oldest needs to learn and adapting it so that the younger ones can participate. What great advice and boy has it worked! The boys already know more now than KJ knew at their age...just because they have "caught" what has been "taught" to big sis. Man, I feel like such a burden has been lifted off of me.

Goose-Egg Head

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
I figured I would share this story...just so you can get an idea of what my days are like. This picture of my son made me think of my dad!!! I am sure that he had lots of goose-eggs and knots in his days. Anyhow, here is what happened. It was a few weeks ago and JJ was supposed to be taking a nap. He said he needed to "go poops". (As a three year old, I have not yet given him the freedom...or shall I say, I have not yet freed myself from having to wipe him up after #2.) Since I was laying down (did I mention it was naptime...this one time I was attempting to nap too), I told him to use my bathroom so I wouldn't have to go far to wipe him. So, he walks into the room with this huge grin on his face. He is looking at me with this grin all over his face, then when he gets close to the bathroom door, he bolts into what he thinks is the bathroom, but instead his head meets the door frame....needless to say, the grin was gone. He came over to me and I casually rubbed his head and sent him on to the toilet. When I go in to wipe him, he has this HUGE goose-egg on his forhead. I get some ice for him and he lays in the bed with me icing the knot. When naptime is over, his twin, DC comes in. Seeing the attention that JJ was getting, DC walks over to the wall and thumps his head on the wall, declaring that he bumped his head and needs ice as well. So, I indulge and let him hold JJ's ice on his forhead for awhile. So, that is the story behind JJ's goose-egg-head!

At the Pumpkin Patch

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Please review my disclosure policy.
Yesterday we went to the pumpkin patch. It was our very first time picking out pumpkins from an actual pumpkin patch on a farm...very different from choosing one from a parking lot in a strip mall! The kids had a blast!!! My daughter, KJ was especially looking forward to the hayride. So, we got to the farm and unloaded the kids. We rode the hayride out to the patch. Once we got there, the kids, except KJ, were thrilled. She did NOT like the fact that the pumpkins had dirt on them. Man, I have got to get this girl used to "country livin"! :-) Each of the big three ended up picking out their very own pumpkins. The babies just had a ball being able to roam freely in the patch. I did have to keep close eyes on them. TJ was trying to sneak pumpkin seeds from smashed pumpkins into his mouth and JI was trying to eat handfuls of dirt! After choosing our pumpkins, much to our surprise, the kids were allowed to help drive the tractor back. They were so cute!! Later, the kids were able to play in the corn maze and climb on the hay pyramid (fondly referred to as "the hay castle" by KJ). The kids loved jumping on the "castle" and racing through the maze. We all had a great time! Once we got home, KJ told me that she had had the best day ever! That alone made it all worth it! Now I just need a good recipe to make pumpkin pies!
