I am in love...

...with a machine! Okay, let me clarify! Check out the pic below.

Do you know what this is? I guess the beautifully displayed bread probably gave it away. It is a Breadman bread machine. Mine is just like this, except it is white. So, wanna know how I ended up with this wonderful machine and what all it can do?

My mom had talked a bit about bread machines and how she would use them in her classroom to help teach measurement. Before the end of the day they would enjoy the fruit (or shall I say bread) of their labor. One day while in the Goodwill I found an old one for $10. Yes, I do shop in the Goodwill...and I am not ashamed to say it!! :-) Anyhow, I got the machine home, cleaned it up and tried it out. Boy, was I shocked! I had fresh bread in a matter of hours. Bread without preservatives and all the other stuff that is not so good for you...and it tasted great! But, the main part was that it was so easy. I just put in the ingredients (always put yeast in last) and programed it based on the type of bread you are making. Oh, I was in love! Well, the pan began to leak after a few months and I just had to get another one. So, I went to Craigslist. Would you believe that someone living just 10 minutes away had one for sale that was practically brand new. An older lady had used it one time. She used the wrong setting and didn't end up with bread and vowed never to use it again. So, she was selling it for $40...and did I mention it had only been used one time...practically brand new! And, it does so much more than the one I had before. So, now that you know how I ended up with my Breadman, let me tell you just how much better it is than the one I had. I can make all kinds of types of bread stuff with this machine. Take a look at this link to the Manual/Recipe Book.I have made dough, deserts, jams, and so much more. Trust me, just take a look at the recipes in the link. I now make all of our bread and I feel really good about it...like I am doing a little something extra nutritious for my kids. They eat 100% whole wheat bread almost everyday! For those of you who have a bread machine or are thinking about getting one, here is the recipe that I use for the bread:
  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 Tbsp powdered milk
  • 2 Tbsp canola oil or melted butter
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 2/3 cup Bob's Red Mill 100% whole wheat bread flour
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats (optional)
  • 1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
If you decide to try it out, I would love to know what you think! I never would have thought that making bread could be so easy! I know it sounds kind of corny, but being able to say that I make our bread from scratch makes me feel sort of...ummm...what is the word...Martha Stewartish! I am on my way to becoming a domestic diva! :-)
